Teen tights, 2016
I took this picture of Alejandra one summer afternoon in Zorrozaurre. A postindustrial pseudo island, a place, at the time, with many possibilities and few interruptions. At the time I was photographing a lot in the cityscapes of Bilbao, as part of a series of works that I would enclose in the project Behind blue eyes//Tell me how close we are to a riot.
I wanted to photograph Alejandra wearing these tights that I had cut. As a teenager I would wear them and use them as sleeves, but for the image I had added the cuts in the nipple area. I remember Alejandra saying something about never seeing tights used like that and Ana (another friend I was also photographing) and I thinking how strange it was for us that this was news to her. Maybe it was a Basque fashion thing? I took a formal portrait of Alejandra wearing the tights, seating, in profile with her neckline long like a swans’. I don´t know how we got into making this image of her but I love that she has her eyes closed, probably due to the glare of the Sun, so strong in Bilbao’s cloudy skies.
